Now to share my finished quilt top!!

QAL By the Sea - ocean themed sampler quilt

A few years ago, the Partners in Design group did a Christmas quilt along. I LOVED how my finished quilt turned out, so I wanted to go a similar route with this one too. (See my Christmas quilt HERE!)

The quilt has a central large block, then has the 12 quilt along blocks around it. I planned to just do the exact same measurements for the sashing and border, but I didn't have enough fabric for that! After some quilty math, I decided on the perfect size! (Perfect because it used exactly how much fabric I had left!) I also had to use a new fabric color that wasn't in any of the blocks! The dark outside border is Kona Caribbean. It fits right in with my other teals and aquas!

For sashing, I would need to cut the following from 1/2 yard of Kona Capri:
(8) 1 1/2" x 12 1/2" pieces
(2) 1 1/2" x 25 1/2" pieces
(4) 1 1/2" x 51 1/2" pieces (made from 40" + 12" pieces)
(2) 1 1/2" x 53 1/2" pieces (made from 40" + 14" pieces)

For the border around the center block and the outer border, I would need to cut the following from 1 yard of Kona Caribbean:
(2) 2" x 22 1/2" pieces
(2) 2" x 25 1/2" pieces
(2) 3 1/2" x 53 1/2" pieces (made from 40" + 14" pieces)
(2) 3 1/2" x 59 1/2" pieces (made from 40" + 20" pieces)

The center block would need to be 22 1/2" square. I originally wanted to applique a saying, but decided I didn't have the patience for that right now. My husband suggested I just print the saying onto the fabric, and I thought that was a brilliant idea!! (A pre-printed ocean-themed panel cut to 22 1/2" square would be great to use here too! Or create your own unique focal block!)

Printing on fabric

I cut four 6" x 22 1/2" strips from Kona White fabric and pressed the same size of freezer paper to the back of each one. Using Microsoft Publisher (Word or PowerPoint would likely work too), I set the page size in the document and in my printer settings to that same size. Then I was able to make my saying into four pages and print each one onto the fabric! It worked so great!!

Printing on fabric to make a custom quilt block

***I decided not to treat my fabric. If and when I wash this quilt, this will wash right out. If you would like to print on fabric so that it's permanent, please use printable fabric sheets or pre-treat your fabric with Bubble Jet Set 2000.

QAL By the Sea - ocean themed sampler quilt

I sewed the four strips together to create my center block. I was SO excited that it worked! I immediately added sashing strips and the border to make the top!

Take me to the ocean
Let me sail the open sea
To breathe the warm & salty air
And dream of things to be.

I am THRILLED with how my quilt top turned out! It's next on the longarm list, so it won't be long before I share the finished quilt!

Want to see how the other hosts put all their blocks together?? Go check them out!

Let's all quilt along!

  1. Ok I know it isn't nice to pick a favorite among children, but your quilt is my favorite. I love the colors and your center block is perfect. I want one just like it. Don't tell the others!!!!

  2. This finished so cute! I almost wish that I hadn't ended mine after block four. I love how you made the center yourself - I really thought it was a panel that you had purchased months/years ago and probably wouldn't be available.
