Dazzling New York Beauty Blog Hop + GIVEAWAY

Sunday, January 24, 2021

I am thrilled to be one of the stops on the blog hop for Cinzia White's newest book! It's a book of 54 New York Beauty blocks, and I've never made one! I love trying new things, so this was the perfect excuse to cross it off my quilty bucket list! Be sure to read to the end to find out how to win a copy of the book, too!

Cinzia's book, Dazzling New York Beauty Sampler, is a stunning compilation of 54 different New York Beauty blocks! Each block is paper pieced, so you're sure to get the same precise results shown in the book every time! You can make a one block mug rug, or use just a few blocks to make a table topper, or use all 54 to make a wonderful sampler quilt!

I just finished making this "ugly" quilt, so I knew I wanted to change it up and use some really bright colors in my sample block! I looked through my stash to find some bright colors. I love sewing with bright colors! It just puts me in a good mood! I found a great mix of Kona solids that looked like a perfect combo!

Solid fabrics for a NYB block

Cinzia is Australian, so she named each of the blocks in the book after an Australian animal. It's a fun list of words I've never heard of like Pipistrelle, Bilby, Galah, and Cassowary. (And if you're like me, you just Googled those to see what they look like!)

I chose the Bandicoot block for it's traditional curves and New York Beauty triangles. (And yes, I had to Google that animal, too!)

Once each strip was paper pieced, I removed the paper and stitched 1/8" inside the edge in order to keep the curves from distorting when sewing the next strip to it.

I used Aurifil 50wt #2021 Natural White for all the piecing on my Juki TL-2010Q. I also decided to switch out the solid white for hot pink. I was indecisive, but decided more color was the right answer!

The stay-stitching worked great! I was really proud of how my very first New York Beauty block turned out!
