Let's Take a Road Trip!

Friday, February 26, 2021

My friend and pattern designer, Heather Black of Quiltachusetts, has so many great things happening! She is now the author of TWO quilting books, and her second fabric collection was just released too!! Of course I jumped at the chance to sew something up with her newest fabrics!

The collection is named "Road Trip" - a nod to the memories of Heather's family road trips. When brainstorming what I might make, I kept circling back to travel themed ideas. I knew suitcases would be a great way to feature the prints in the collection, so the idea was born!

Road Trip fabric by Heather Black

The Road Trip collection has 12 fabrics plus a coordinating panel - and in Heather's words, they have a "fresh modern color palette and casual prints." The collection is printed by Paintbrush Studios - whose warehouse is only about 30 minutes from me in Kansas City! You can find all the fabrics on Heather's website HERE.

Heather sent me a fat quarter bundle of the collection, which determined the size of my suitcases. Each suitcase measures 13" x 16".

I sketched out the design on paper, did a bit of quilty math, and started cutting. It was great to create a quilt just for fun!

I actually have several bolts of Painter's Palette solids on hand from Paintbrush Studios, so I used their White for the background.

It only took a couple hours to turn the pieces into a quilt top! All the piecing was done with 50wt Aurifil #2021 Natural White on my Juki TL-2010Q. It measures 56" x 62" - a throw quilt. My favorite size of quilt to make!

And it just worked out that I finished the quilt top on the same day that we were leaving for a family road trip!

I'm hoping to quilt and bind it over the weekend, then I'll share the finished quilt here next week! Please comment with your quilting suggestions! I always default to a meander, but I need some better ideas!

Heather also sent me a copy of her newest book - Design, Make, Quilt Modern. However, it's been stuck in the USPS system for more than 40 days now, so I don't have that to show you! But do go "look inside" of the book on Amazon for a sneak peek! My favorite is the circles quilt!! (Bet you wouldn't have guessed that! Ha!)

You can also get the book directly from Heather - and she'll even autograph it! Get one HERE! Or get it from the publisher on the C&T Publishing website!

Be sure to watch for the post in a few days with the finished quilt! I'll share it on Instagram and Facebook too!

  3. Beautiful quilt! I think you'll have to custom quilt each suitcase with a different pattern and then something totally different for the background! Not what you want to hear, I'm sure!
