Popsicle Picnic - A FREE Quilt Block Pattern!

Tuesday, August 3, 2021

It's time for another round of Quilt Block Mania! This month, quilt bloggers from around the web are sharing FREE patterns for picnic or BBQ quilt blocks!

The hot days of summer mean popsicles in our house of boys, so I knew that would make a fun block this month!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

I have a few summer-themed patterns already, so I'm excited to add this one to the mix! (Free sunglasses quilt block, Pineapple Twist quilt pattern, Cotton Candy quilt pattern, a lemon quilt pattern, and even a watermelon quilt pattern!)

The Popsicle Picnic block is made using raw-edge applique, a technique I love!

The block would be great for making a summer table runner! Or make a few of the blocks from the designers this month for some fun summer quilty pillows!

For my version, I used solid fabrics from my stash. I love using Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 when doing raw-edge applique. The back of the fusible is sticky, so you can move and rearrange your pieces until you're happy with them before ironing!

I used my light pad (HERE is one if you don't have one!) to trace the shapes from the pattern, and since I planned to cut out the center of the fusible on the large popsicle pieces, I used that space for the other shapes!

In case you weren't sure what my favorite color is... My mini Oliso iron coordinated perfectly with the block!

This block even allowed me to use my new applique fusing mat and pressing sheet!

Once fused, I picked out some matching (or at least pretty close!) colors of 50wt Aurifil thread. I used #6725 Moondust for the popsicle sticks, #2425 Bright Pink and #2530 Blossom Pink for the pink popsicle, and #5006 Light Turquoise and #2810 Turquoise for the turquoise popsicle.

I stitched around each piece to secure it to the background square. I love the look the stitches add!

Isn't your mouth watering just looking at the pictures?! You could have strawberry, cherry, lime, grape, lemonade...
