It's week six of the Destination: Quilt Along! This week's block is a covered bridge!

Do you have many covered bridges where you live? I live in Missouri, which you'd think would have quite a few! But most have been replaced, and they're actually quite hard to find! Back when my oldest turned one (over seven years ago!), we had some family photos taken on a covered bridge. It was on someone's driveway though, not a public road. I haven't found any others in our area!

Slice of Pi Quilts

I did not pick out the fabrics for my quilt ahead of time. I'm just pulling from my solids stash as needed. I do keep all the fabrics I've already used in a pile, so then I just add a few more if needed for the next block. This way the blue sky and the greens for grasses and trees stay the same from block to block to help them stay fairly cohesive.

Solid fabrics

I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 on the back of all my pieces. I like how the fusible stays sticky so I can position - and re-position - the pieces until I'm happy with them. It's the fusible I use the most for raw-edge applique!

Assembling this block was a bit like a fun puzzle! It came together fairly quickly, and I love how it turned out!

My best tip is to trim off the top of the tree pieces BEFORE you press them onto the block. If you forget or don't press onto a fusible mat, your block will be stuck to your ironing board!

I've picked out all my Aurifil thread colors to match my fabrics, but I haven't had a chance to stitch the pieces down yet. I'll try to squeeze that in before next week's block! (I'm waiting to trim it to 12 1/2" after I do the stitching too.)

  1. When we lived back east, a LONG time ago, they were fairly common, but I haven't seen one lately. I love your family picture.

  2. I really like the effect of the solid colors. It reminds me of a paint-by-number picture. It's like something I might have attempted when I was a kid. Very cute!

  3. Fun picture of you with the oldest! I do love a covered bridge, and now want to do more research on ones in Maine, when we are ready to explore!
