A Crayon Quilt!

Sometimes I get to work with cool people and make cool things, and this is definitely one of those times! Riley Blake Designs sent me all the fabric to make this Crayola quilt!

The pattern makes a 64-box of Crayola crayons. I mean, if that doesn't take a person back to third grade, I'm not sure what will!

The crayon tips are made with paper piecing, and the rest of the design is raw edge applique.

All the fabrics are from the Confetti Cottons solids from Riley Blake. Aren't those green stripes just iconic Crayola?!

I used several colors of Aurifl 50wt thread for the applique. I have quite the rainbow of colors, and I had pretty good matches to what I needed!

I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for my applique. I buy it by the bolt so I always have it on hand!

Once the quilt top was finished, I pin basted it with the backing and batting in order to quilt it on my regular sewing machine.

I debated about whether to do horizontal lines or vertical lines. I think both would have been great, but I opted for horizontal this time.

The green binding was the perfect way to finish the quilt! (Tutorial for machine sewing the binding HERE!)

I even remembered to sew one of my quilt labels into the binding!

Do you see that backing peeking around?? It's a Crayola PANEL! It was just a tad too small for the back, so I added some strips of yellow crayon fabric to each side.

I quilted it with a 50wt light gray thread so the quilting texture would show up, but the color wouldn't be that noticeable from a bit further away.

See the panel?! It says "Throw kindness around like confetti!" It's from the Colors of Kindness fabric line from Riley Blake Designs! And Crayola has a whole Colors of Kindness box of crayons now too! The crayons are colors like "A Warm Hug" and "Hello Sunshine!"

The colors on the fabric are bright and it just makes me smile looking at it!

This quilt has been so much fun to make!

I vividly remember being in the third grade and getting a new box of Crayola crayons at the start of the school year.

Then at the end of that year, our class got to take a field trip to the Crayola crayon factory in Winfield, Kansas! This was in the early 1990s, and the factory is no longer there. But I remember it so well!

That started my fascination with factories and behind the scenes things! I've loved visiting other factories over the years, and always jump at the chance to go somewhere new!

About the same time as my third-grade field trip, Crayola added some new colors to the box including Cerulean. That instantly became my favorite color!

I rationed that Cerulean crayon to last all year and used it only for the most special of projects.

I still think it's a great color, but now I love the turquoise shades just a little more.
