The Early Bloomer quilt is on the cover of March/April 2025 issue of The Quilt Pattern Magazine!

White-on-white fabrics from the Lights On II fabric collection by Riley Blake Designs

This quilt started with a bundle of white-on-white fabrics from the new Lights On II fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs. The fabrics look like a solid white, but up close, you can see tiny white designs printed on them. One of them has gummy bears on it!

When given the choice for *any* color to choose to pair with white, of course I would choose turquoise! It's my favorite color, and I would put it in every quilt if I could! It's the color I usually have the most of on hand, so I had enough to use several different shades to make it look scrappy.

A fun fact about the quilt: it has 2,025 squares - and it's the year 2025! That does sound like a lot of squares, but the quilt is made of of 25-patch blocks, so it goes together quickly!

Early Bloomer quilt on the longarm

Once the quilt top was finished, I loaded it on the longarm with Hobbs 80/20 bleached batting and free-motion quilted a meander design. I chose white thread so it would blend in with the white fabrics, and from just a few feet away, it just blends in to the turquoise fabrics too.

It's hard to photograph the white-on-white fabrics so that you can see the different designs, so I used a small black light to try and get them to show up better in photos.

Can you see them?

To meet the deadline for the magazine, I had to photograph the quilt on one of the coldest days of the entire winter!

My husband and I went out to our local lake to get some pictures of it on the ice, but we hurried because the temperature was well below zero!

I made a few digital mock-ups of the quilt to see what it would look like in other colors. Which one would you choose??

The magazine chose one of the photos we took in the cold to use on the cover! My husband is behind the quilt shouting, "Are you done yet?!" So it makes me smile just looking at the cover.
