Every day for the 12 days leading up to Christmas, I'm sharing a tutorial for how to make a fabric ornament!

To make a cinnamon stick and fabric scrap tree ornament, you just need fabric scraps, cinnamon sticks, and about 5 minutes! Each one needs only about a 3" x 8" piece of fabric.

I used a pinking rotary blade in my regular rotary cutter so my strips had a decorative edge. You could use pinking shears to get this same look!

I cut my fabric strips about 1/4" wide and 8" long. My cinnamon sticks are really short - only about 3" long - so I only needed eight strips.

I tied each strip onto the cinnamon stick using a single knot. Just the criss-cross part of tying your shoes.

I pulled each knot tight, then pushed each one up on the stick so it was tight against the one before it. TIP: When the knot is still loose (as shown in the photo below), make sure the right sides of the fabric are facing you on both ends and then pull tight.

It was very fast to tie just eight knots!

If your cinnamon sticks are longer, you might like the look of 1/2" strips instead.

My 1/4" strips were quite droopy after tying them on, so I decided to starch them!

I grabbed a can of Faultless starch from the laundry room and sprayed both sides of the fabric lightly.

A quick press made a huge difference!

Then I trimmed the ends of the strips to make a tree shape so that the top strip was only about 1/2" long, but the bottom strip was over an inch long.

The last step is to add a hanger! I used red Aurifil 12wt thread.

I just tied a knot around the top of the cinnamon stick, but you could add a dot of hot glue if needed.

And that's it! Very quick and easy!

  1. Did you finish the 12 days of Christmas? I can't find anything past this one. Thank you for these ideas. I am hoping to make a few for next Christmas.
